The game required teams to breach their opponents’ defenses, collectively referred to as the “Outer Works,” before attempting to capture the opposing alliance’s tower. Teams could weaken the tower by launching “boulders,” which were small foam balls, into designated scoring goals. Once the tower’s defenses were sufficiently reduced, teams could complete the capture by surrounding the tower or scaling it using a single rung located on the tower wall. Walter was designed and built so effectively that Edwardsville Technology still uses it today for demonstrations. Due to its durable construction and reliable design, the robot has remained virtually indestructible over years of use.
